Open to high school students in Minnesota who have served with distinction on the staff of an NSPA/MHSPA-member broadcast, literary arts magazine, newspaper/newsmagazine, specialty magazine, website or yearbook by the end of the current school year. 

Students must be in good academic standing. There isn’t a grade-point requirement.

  • North Star Editor: Served with distinction on staff for two years (four semesters) and held an editorial or leadership position (producer, section editor, business manager) for at least one year.
  • North Star Journalist: Served with distinction on staff for one year (two semesters) and held an editorial or leadership position (producer, section editor, business manager).
  • Distinguished Journalist: Served with distinction on staff for at least one year (two semesters) in any capacity (staff writer, columnist, photojournalist, etc)


Students must maintain the high ethical standards outlined in the NSPA Model Code of Ethics.

Advisers nominate students who meet the requirements above and, in the opinion of the adviser, are worthy of being honored for journalistic contributions and leadership. 

Although there will be a formal announcement of the winners, all qualified students nominated by the adviser by the deadline will be honored.

The number of students honored is at the discretion of the adviser. The form, available in the Member Portal, up to 25 nominations. An additional form may be used if necessary.
