Journalists around the state submitted a number of inspiring portfolios in this year’s Journalist of the Year scholarship competition.
Congratulations to our 2025 Minnesota Journalist of the Year, Yoni Zacks, Editor-in-Chief of The Spectrum (Anna Reid adviser) at the Blake School. This year’s judge said, “As Yoni said, ‘I have been involved in journalism since the first day of school my freshman year and never stopped!’ This passion for journalism is seen in all he does. Whether it’s speaking at the Minnesota Capitol on behalf of New Voices legislation or writing hard-hitting pieces about political independence, Yoni exhibits the best of journalism. Not only does he work hard to support his own publication, he has been a tireless advocate for journalists across the state. Yoni continually steps up to lead others, whether it’s speaking at the MHSPA Convention or working within his own publication to lead initiatives like improving copy editing. Yoni shows up in other ways like leading others through a challenging fake interview situation or writing about compelling topics like the Israel and Hamas War.”
He is joined in this honor by runner-up Annie Zhang (Kathryn Campbell, adviser), Editor-in-Chief of The Rubicon at St. Paul Summit School and Academy. This year’s judge said, “It’s clear from Annie’s portfolio that she demonstrates leadership, teamwork, and quality in all she does. In her own words: ‘I strive to create an environment where my staff feels comfortable asking questions, sharing their thoughts, and contributing their ideas.’ In addition to her leadership, Annie is a talented journalist who writes inspiring pieces that touch the human heart. Whether creating graphics or taking photos, Annie shows versatility and is able to tell powerful stories in many ways.”
Please join me in congratulating our outstanding Minnesota journalism leaders.
